Brad Goodrich

Local Favorite Brad Goodrich captures lead in calf and steer roping on day 3 of 98th annual Round-Up; Rodeo fans mourn passing of renowned bucking horse, Anchor Bay.

Local favorite Brad Goodrich, Hermiston, OR, captured first in calf roping and in steer roping, while also placing in the steer wrestling event Friday, as the 98th staging of the legendary Pendleton Round-Up moved into the final of its four days-Saturday’s final events. At the same time rodeo fans mourned the passing of Anchor Bay, a renowned bucking horse who died on Friday after suffering an injury in the bareback event on Wednesday.

Goodrich bested a field of 12 cowboys with a time of 9.5 seconds in calf roping Friday and continues in first for three days with a combined 19.5 seconds in two events. Following him Friday were Josh Peek, Pueblo, CO, with a time of 9.6, and another local, Jeff Coelho, Echo, OR, at 12.1. The 40-year-old Goodrich has won over $1 million in his 21-year rodeo career, which he kicked off as champion of the 1988 College National Finals Rodeo. So far Goodrich has nearly $3,000 in winnings at the Round-Up in calf roping.

In the steer roping Goodrich was followed by Ike Sankey, Joliet, MT 14.8 and Ryan Endicott, Caldwell, ID 15.3.

According to Cindy Schonholtz, animal welfare coordinator for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) the Round-Up’s official Rodeo Veterinarian, Dr. Doug Corey, treated Anchor Bay with pain medication and observed her while preparing to possibly transport her to Washington State College of Veterinary Medicine at Pullman, Washington, but she did not survive to make the trip.

T.J. Korkow, owner of the mare, indicated he had been willing to do take all measures possible to save the horse. “We raised the mare on the ranch in our bucking horse breeding program and we were going to retire her after this rodeo season to raise colts,” he said.

Korkow had a lot to lose. Anchor Bay was a decorated bareback horse, selected for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo nine times, taking many cowboys to the winners circle including champion Will Lowe. She bucked at her first NFR at the age of four and among her other achievements, she was named the 2004 Badlands Circuit Finals Bareback Horse of the Year.

The 25-year-old Lowe, who took first place at last year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, and who has won over $1.1 million since joining the PRCA at 19, is doing well at the Round-Up. He finished first on Friday in the bareback event, with a score of 88. He was followed by Buck Lunak, Cut Bank, MT, 80.0, and Royce Ford, Briggsdale, CO, 78.0. Ford, 26, has won over $700,000 since joining the PRCA in 2000 and is the son of Bruce Ford, who won the national bareback title a record five times.

First in Friday’s staging of the saddle bronc event was Joaquin Real, Caliente, CA, with a score of 82.0, followed by Shawn Morehead, Bruneau, ID 82.0 and Josh Reynolds, Corvallis, MT 80.0. Reynolds, 33, has competed in professional rodeo for 10 years and earlier this year won the championship at the Stampede in Missoula, Montana.

Another Oregonian, Caleb Ray, Ironside, finished at the top, this time taking first in steer wrestling with a time of 6.5 seconds, just ahead of Ben Shofner, Jasper, TX 6.6 and Sean Mulligan, Coleman, OK 6.7. With $262 for the day’s win, Ray is well behind the three-day leader, Rhett Kennedy, Chowchilla, CA, who has $3,015 in the event and the fastest time yet at 4.8. Behind Kennedy are Tyler Haugen, Sturgis, SD, $2,622, and Les Shepperson, Midwest, WY, $2,229.

In what many consider the most dramatic event, bullriding, Dustin Jenkins, Missoula, MT, took first with a score of 86.0. Three men tied for second with scores of 76: Shawn Hogg, Odessa, TX, Brian Curtis, Belle Fourche, SD and Jay Dunford, Menoken, ND.

In the only women’s event, barrel racing, Linzie Walker, Conway, WA finished first with a time of 28.33 seconds. In second place was Barbra West, Oak Harbor, WA 28.67, followed by Kyna Schrader, Middleton, ID 28.85.

And in the only team event, team roping, B.J. Campbell, Benton City, WA, header, and Russell Cardoza, Farmington, CA, heeler took first place with a time of 5.7 seconds. Oregonian Brandon Beers, Powell Butte, and Jade Corkill, Fallon, NV, captured second in six seconds flat while Riley Minor and his brother, Brady, Ellensburg, WA were third at 11.3. In team roping the header must first rope the steer’s head and then the heeler must rope both hind legs.

Campbell, 30, who earlier this summer won the All Around title at the Chief Joseph Days rodeo in Joseph, Oregon, and who won over $125,000 last year in professional rodeo, won the team roping event at the Round-Up in 2001 and followed that up by winning the Round-Up’s All Around title two years running, in 2002 and 2003.
