Fred Hill

Fred Hill

Fred was born on Feb. 15, 1913 at Helix to James and Beulah Hill. The family moved to Pendleton in 1918.

Fred played basketball and was a member of the 1931 Pendleton High School team that won the State Championship. He received a basketball scholarship to Oregon State College at Corvallis and played on the first Oregon State team to win the West Coast Championship.

After graduation, he worked as a county agent in Baker where he met his wife, Jean Silven. They moved back to the family ranch in Juniper Canyon.

Fred was involved in the Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon for many years. He was on the Round-Up Board and was especially fond of his tenure as Native-American Director. He and Clarence Burke and Jesse Jones, Sr. were great friends. Continue reading…

Long-time Round-Up volunteer Harold Thompson of Adams is the grand marshal for the 2008 Westward Ho! Parade, held each year on Friday of Round-Up week. The selection was announced by Parade Director Billy Lorenzen at the 2008 Introductory Party Saturday night at the Red Lion Hotel.

2008 Volunteer of the Year, Russ Nekraszewicz holds open the Round-Up shuttle door for Judy LeGore

The Pendleton Round-Up board of directors has named Russ Nekraszewicz the recipient of the Orville Gerberding Volunteer of the Year award for 2007. The award was presented Saturday at the annual Barbecue Helper’s Party in the Let ‘er Buck room.

Nekraszewicz was selected by the Round-Up board for his many years of running the Round-Up’s courtesy van service.

Butch Thurman, president of the Round-Up Association, says Nekraszewicz is very deserving of this award.

“Russ does an outstanding job of managing the courtesy vans for us,” Thurman said. “He works from seven in the morning until midnight during Round-Up. He puts in a ton of hours. This is going to be his last year of handling that job. Whoever takes his place is going to have some big shoes to fill.”

The national Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign that has swept the rodeo circuit is a resounding success in Pendleton once again it was announced today. The money — $21,807.95 — raised on Sept. 13 will benefit two local nonprofit organizations fighting breast cancer.

“We are proud of the way Pendleton rodeo fans responded to the Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign,” Round-Up President Butch Thurman said. “The sea of people wearing pink dramatizes the volunteer spirit of the Round-Up.”

Lacey Mayberry, 21, of Touchet, WA, was introduced to the media as Queen of the 2008 Pendleton Round-Up at the annual breakfast at the home of Doug and Heather Corey on Sunday December 16th. The breakfast was also hosted by George and Joan Corey, Steve and Susan Corey and Dr. Tom and Ellyn Weeks.

Serving as Mayberry’s court are Hailey Davis, 18, of Hermiston; Kathryn Hixson, 19, of Pendleton; Katie Partlow, 21, of Portland and Cheyenne Williams, 19, of Athena.

Both Butch Thurman, president of the Round-Up and Court Director Larry Williams were pleased with the new royalty. “I’m really excited about this year’s court,” Williams said. “These girls are talented, they can ride well and are fantastic public speakers. We’re going to have a great year.”
