Are You Tough Enough to Wear Pink?

Randy Severe, Herb Bitting, Tia Gentner and mastectomy fitter trainee Lisa Hummell gather at St. Anthony Hospital to discuss the Pendleton Round-Up's successful Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign which raised $22,598 in 2009 to help local breast cancer patients.

Round-Up donates earnings from the 2009 rodeo

PENDLETON — The sea of pink that streamed into the Round-Up Grounds on Sept. 17, 2009 has enriched the coffers of two local groups helping those battling breast cancer. The Spirit Program of the Cancer Community Renewal Project and St. Anthony Hospital received donations of $11,299 dollars each thanks to fundraising at the rodeo. This year’s donations are $1,300 a year more than the groups received in 2008.

Tia Gentner, respiratory therapy manager and certified mastectomy fitter for the hospital said the money will be put to good use.

“It goes to help breast cancer patients with traveling expenses to go to St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla for treatments because we can’t do that here,” she said. “It also goes to help them with their monthly expenses, mastectomy products, swim suits and prosthetics.”

Herb Bitting, a board of directors member for the Cancer Community Renewal Project was pleased with that group’s windfall.

“It goes into our Spirit Program, which provides exercise, massage and yoga programs for breast cancer survivors,” he said.

Bitting admitted that he used to seldom wear pink himself, but now finds it a frequent part of his wardrobe.  Round-Up President Randy Severe agreed, saying he wouldn’t have believed the pastel color would become one of Round-Up’s symbols.

“I’d of said it looks great on the ladies 10 years ago,” he said with a smile. “I think it’s a nice statement. It’s a good feeling to be a little part of the fight against breast cancer.”

The money is raised by the sale of pink items at two booths on the Round-Up Grounds. Also, Severe said sponsors make donations. For example Justin Boots raffled off pink boots.

“It’s a way for the macho cowboys to give back to the ladies, and it’s an honor for us to do it,” Severe said of the fundraising event that is popular at hundreds of rodeos throughout the country. TETWP began in 2004 at the National Finals Rodeo, the brainchild of Terry Wheatley, herself a breast cancer survivor. It has raised more than $5 million to help in the battle against breast cancer.

With the 100th anniversary of Round-Up set for this year, both Bitting and Gentner are excited about this year’s fundraising effort. There will be four booths set up to handle demands for pink items. They are also planning to dramatize just how many years are in a centennial. That many breast cancer survivors will be on hand Sept. 16 for the rodeo.

“There will be 100 survivors out there because they want to give back to the Round-Up,” Bitting said. “This year is going to be a fantastic year.”

Beautiful things come in small packages. Ty Skiver, known for his championship saddles, is crafting a limited edition series of miniature saddles to commemorate the 100th Pendleton Round-Up. The first in the series of this miniature will be sold at auction during the Let ’er Buck Ball Dec. 31 at Hamley’s. Saddles numbered 2-25 will be sold for $5,000 dollars. Round-Up’s share of the proceeds for the saddle will be donated to the rodeo’s centennial celebration the second full week of September.

Skiver has incorporated designs that hearken back to saddles crafted by Don King of Sheridan, Wyo.

“He invented the Sheridan style of carving in the 1950s and 1960s,” Skiver, who began his career of making saddles in Wyoming, said. “His work has awesome craftsmanship. He was the Duff Severe in my area and he made some tools for me.”

Severe also served as an inspiration in the design of the miniatures.

“Doing the miniature was inspired by Duff’s work,” Skiver said.  “There’s a miniature he Continue reading…

EM RU Statue crpd copy

PENDLETON — World-famous sculptor Austin Barton has been commissioned to create the bronze bucking horse made famous by the Pendleton Round-Up logo for the Centennial Plaza project. The artist is also creating a limited edition series of 100 28-inch replicas of the statue for sale to Western art collectors and fans of the Round-Up.

The sculptor was raised in the Snake River and Wallowa Valley of Eastern Oregon, giving him an intimate knowledge of the Western way of life. His pieces are sold in galleries across the United States and his bronzes are in many private and corporate collections.

“I’ve admired Austin’s work for years,” Round-Up Director Tim Hawkins, who is chairman of the centennial committee, said. “When I approached him for a potential commission he was both flattered and excited. I didn’t think we would be able to afford an artist of Austin’s reputation, but he told me ‘I don’t charge for being famous.’”

Hawkins said that as Barton began work on the bronze he confided it may be the most significant piece he’s ever created.

“I was pleased,” Barton said of Round-Up approaching him to immortalize the bucking Continue reading…

Sally A. Hopper

Sally Hopper never got too far away from the Pendleton Round-Up — she even had a condo that overlooked the Round-Up grounds.

The veteran Round-Up office manager left work a week ago Wednesday and failed to show up on schedule on Friday morning. A co-worker and a police officer found her on the floor in the aftermath of a stroke. Hopper, 62, was flown to a Portland hospital, but died Wednesday morning. The death leaves a huge void for the Round-Up and Happy Canyon, which have shared her for 30-plus years.

“She was really the heartbeat of the Pendleton Round-Up,” said Randy Severe, president of the Round-Up Association. The personable Hopper attended her first Round-Up as a babe in arms, watching from her family’s box in the south grandstand. “She never missed a Round-Up,” said her mother, Pat Hopper.

Sally started working in the Round-Up office as a high school student. After earning her teaching degree at Oregon State University, she tested the waters with other Continue reading…
