PENDLETON, Ore. — In three short years, the Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign held Thursday during the Pendleton Round-Up has become a tradition that helps local women in their battle against breast cancer. In 2008, the event raised a total of $20,271.98. That amount was divided equally between the Cancer Community Renewal Project and St. Anthony Hospital. All money will go to area women fighting breast cancer.

“There’s a song that ladies love cowboys,” Round-Up President Randy Severe said. “Well, cowboys love ladies too. We have a deep appreciation of women and their strength.”

Cancer has touched the two women who spearhead helping in the battle against breast cancer at St. Anthony Hospital. Respiratory Services Manager Tia Gentner and Tanya Weinke, EKG/office assistant, lost their mothers to cancer. Continue reading…

Efforts for large-scale improvements at both the Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon grounds received a major boost with a with a $500,000 grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust. $300,000 of the funding will support the Pendleton Round-Up Centennial Grandstand project and $200,000 of the funding will support the reconstruction of the roof structure at Happy Canyon that was previously removed for safety reasons. The Round-Up grant is contingent upon a $300,000 community fundraising match.

The Pendleton Round-Up Association has developed plans to replace the west end seating with new grandstands that will complement the existing historic structures while providing cover and adding convenience and safety features to the complex. Happy Canyon is working on a multi-phase grounds improvement project with the first Continue reading…

The Pendleton Roundup in Pendleton, Oregon, is rodeo done in a huge way, with parades, a cowboy breakfast, music, art, and a pageant of Native American arts and culture. The rodeo itself draws the top cowboys in the land. The stately Pendleton House (541-276-8581; pendletonhousebnb.com) on Main Street serves full breakfasts and has an English garden and a wide front porch. Elaborate tunnels under the city once housed Pendleton’s seamy side, and Pendleton Underground Tours (800-226-6398; pendletonundergroundtours.org) offers narrated tours year-round, with period-dressed mannequins lending an eerie realism to the former brothels and card rooms. Need a woolly Pendleton blanket to keep your cowboy warm? Tours of the Pendleton Woolen Mill (pendleton-usa.com) are held on weekdays.
