After the first day of the Pendleton Round-Up, Kelly Timberman on Broadway and Ben Londo on Darth Vader were tied for the bareback riding with identical scores of 82. Timberman said it was a relief to have a solid performance.

“This year has been a real up and down year,” he said. “Rodeo is like that. It can take you to the top of the world and drop you to the bottom in no time at all.”

Timberman said Broadway was the best horse he’s ever drawn at the Round-Up.

The 98th annual Pendleton Round-Up officially begins at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday in the Round-Up Grounds, but the festivities have been going on since Saturday.

Hundreds have already packed the Happy Canyon Arena for day one of the U.S. Bank Pendleton PBR Classic, attended the concert and lined up to watch the Dress Up Parade. The award-winning PBR event concludes Tuesday night.

At 1:15 p.m. Wednesday the cannon will fire to signal the beginning of the world’s largest four-day rodeo. Top rodeo athletes — from ropers to rough riders to barrel racers — will take to the unique grass infield in an attempt to gain final points in the standings for the National Pro Rodeo finals. Seats are available for all four days. In addition to the classic rodeo events, be sure to check out the Indian races and wild cow milking competitions.

The 98th Edition of the Pendleton Round-Up is off and rolling this week as nearly 700 contestants compete for more than $400,000 is prize money. With the regular season coming to a close at the end of the month, Pendleton is an important stop for the cowboys.

Trevor Brazile, the sport’s five-time and reining world champion is one of the favorites to capture this year’s coveted all around title. “It’s a good rodeo. It’s the last big rodeo up here before we head south,” he said. “It’s the tradition and there’s a lot of stuff to like about Pendleton, not to mention the money.” Brazile has had good late-summer surge to pull away from the pack in the all around standings.
