Montana father-son team tie arena record at 101st Pendleton Round-Up rodeo

Pendleton, Oregon–After 22 years of competition as a rodeo roper, a dad says that his performance today (Thursday, September 15, 2011) was the highlight of his career—thanks in large part to the help of his 19-year-old son. Shane Bessette, Vaughn, MT, and his son Shawn, 19, tied the arena record for team roping Thursday with a 4.8 second ride at the Pendleton Round-Up. Despite the fact that the Round-Up is 101 years old, the records was just set in 2008.
The 45-year-old Shane Bessette is the arena manager for JS Rodeo, a professional rodeo company in Montana. While he’s competed in PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Assn.) events for over two decades, son Shawn has been professional for only two years, starting at 17! Naturally, he learned to rope from dad.
